Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about Hope Haven? We have answers.

Hope Haven is a proposed faith-based nonprofit residential community in Texas that provides affordable single-family homes for low- to no-income families. Unlike traditional housing assistance, Hope Haven focuses on homeownership — not renting — through a sweat equity model where families contribute their work, skills, and talents toward earning their home.

Hope Haven is a faith-inspired organization grounded in biblical principles, particularly Jeremiah 29:7 — the idea that when we invest in community prosperity, everyone benefits. However, Hope Haven welcomes and serves families of all backgrounds and beliefs. Our faith motivates our mission, but does not limit who we serve.

Hope Haven is planned for a location in Texas. Specific site details will be announced as the project progresses through its development phases.

Hope Haven is designed for low- to no-income families who desire homeownership and are willing to invest sweat equity. Specific eligibility criteria will be developed as the project moves forward, but the core requirement is a genuine willingness to contribute your time, skills, and effort toward building your home and community.

Yes. That’s what makes Hope Haven different. Families work toward full homeownership through their sweat equity contributions and an affordable ownership arrangement. There are no landlords, and families cannot be displaced by someone else’s decision to raise rent or sell the property.

Sweat equity means contributing your physical labor, professional skills, or time toward building your home and community. This can include construction work, professional services (like teaching, medical care, or administration), community maintenance, mentoring, and more. Every family’s unique gifts are valued and counted toward their path to ownership.

No. Hope Haven is fundamentally different from rental housing. Families are working toward ownership — not paying rent to a landlord. Every contribution of sweat equity moves a family closer to owning their home outright. There are no lease renewals, no arbitrary rent increases, and no risk of eviction by a property owner.

Hope Haven supports a community bartering system where residents can exchange goods and services with each other. For example, a resident who is a hairdresser might exchange haircuts for childcare from another resident. This creates a self-sustaining internal economy where everyone’s contributions are valued.

Hope Haven plans to offer financial literacy education, career development and job placement assistance, family counseling, wellness programs, childcare connections, mentorship, and community events. These services are designed to help families thrive in every area of life — not just housing.
